How Private Jet Charter Works
Chartering a private jet is simpler than most people expect, but the terminology and pricing structure catch first-time flyers off guard. Here’s what actually happens between search and takeoff.
1. On-demand charter vs empty legs
An on-demand charter is a dedicated flight booked for your exact route and dates — you set the schedule, and pricing reflects the full cost of positioning and operating that aircraft for your trip alone. An empty leg is a one-way repositioning flight an operator already needs to fly (returning an aircraft to base, or repositioning for another client) — because the flight is happening regardless, these are typically sold at 50-75% below standard charter rates, with fixed dates that can’t be changed.
2. How pricing works
Charter quotes are built from aircraft category (light, midsize, super-midsize, heavy jet), flight time, positioning cost if the aircraft isn’t already at your departure airport, and airport/landing fees. Empty-leg pricing is simpler: it’s a fixed price for a fixed route and date, take it or leave it.
3. Deposits and payment
Most operators require a deposit to confirm a booking, commonly 25-50% at contract signing, with the balance due before departure. Cancellation terms vary significantly by operator and how close to departure you cancel, so it’s worth confirming this before you commit, particularly for weather-dependent routes.
4. What to have ready before requesting a quote
Departure and destination airports (not just cities: a route can have several airport options nearby), preferred dates and rough time, passenger count, and any special requirements (pets, extra luggage, accessibility needs). The more specific you are, the faster and more accurate the quotes.
5. Booking
Once you accept a quote, you’ll see the operator’s certification, aircraft details and full terms before signing anything. Payment options typically include bank transfer and card, with some brokers now supporting cryptocurrency.
